If you're planning to obtain your O'Level certificate or improve your previous results, the NECO GCE offers another opportunity without waiting for the next school based examination. Registering early also gives you enough time to prepare for the examination and avoid late registration charges.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially commenced registration for the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, commonly known as the NECO GCE. This year's examination will be conducted using both Hybrid Computer Based Examination (CBE) and Pen and Paper Examination (PPE), depending on the subject.

NECO GCE Registration Requirements

Before registering, ensure you have the following:

• A valid National Identification Number (NIN).

• A recent passport photograph not older than six months with a white background.

• An active email address or phone number.

• Payment for the registration fee.

• Your personal and academic information.

During registration, your biometric fingerprints will also be captured.

NECO GCE Registration Fee

The official registration fee is ₦30,000.

This amount includes:

• Four figure Mathematical Table.

• Waterproof Certificate Jacket or Folder.

Additional charges such as Stamp Duty, Service Charges and Remita fees also apply.

Note: The registration fee is non refundable once payment has been made.

Registration Period

The registration schedule is as follows:

Candidates who register during the late registration period will pay an additional ₦5,000.

Walk in registration costs ₦43,000 per candidate.

How to Register for the NECO GCE 2026

Follow these steps to complete your registration successfully:

1. Visit the official NECO SSCE External registration portal.

2. Create an account using your email address or phone number.

3. Activate your newly created account.

4. Purchase your registration quota.

5. Complete your personal biodata.

6. Enter your National Identification Number (NIN) correctly.

7. Upload a recent passport photograph with a white background, or capture one using the system camera where available.

8. Visit a reputable cybercafé for biometric fingerprint capture.

9. Carefully review all your personal and academic information.

10. Make payment using any of the approved payment options.

11. Submit your registration.

12. Print your NECO Photocard.

13. Collect your examination timetable.

14. Keep your registration documents safe until the examination.

Examination Mode

The 2026 NECO GCE will be conducted using a dual mode system consisting of:

Photocard and Attestation Requirements

After registration, you should collect:

• Your NECO examination timetable.

• At least one clear copy of your NECO Photocard.

The Referee's Attestation section on the Photocard must be signed and stamped by any of the following:

• Principal of a recognised secondary school.

• Ordained clergyman or Chief Imam.

• Commissioned officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces or Police not below the rank of Captain or its equivalent.

• Senior Civil Servant not below Grade Level 14.

• Legal practitioner with at least ten years of experience.

You are not required to submit the Photocard to any NECO State Office for stamping.

Candidates with Special Needs

Candidates with special needs should register normally.

However, they must correctly indicate the nature of their disability or special need while completing their online biodata.

Examination Centres

NECO groups examination centres into neighbourhoods within each state.

When registering, select the neighbourhood where you intend to write the examination.

You should also reprint your Photocard at least two weeks before the examination to confirm your examination centre.

Mock Examination

NECO will organise a mock examination for interested candidates.

The Council will announce the date before the commencement of the main examination.

Important Guidelines

Before completing your registration, note the following:

• Registration fees are non refundable.

• Biometric verification will be conducted during the examination.

• Candidates with mismatched fingerprints or passport photographs will be treated as impersonators.

• Multiple registration is prohibited and may lead to cancellation of all results.

• Examination neighbourhoods cannot be changed after registration.

• Only one correction of registration details is allowed before the examination begins.

• Complete change of name is not permitted.

• Only one name component or passport photograph can be corrected before the examination.

• Smoking and possession of prohibited electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, tablets, programmable calculators and similar gadgets are not allowed in the examination hall.

• Candidates should dress in plain clothes (mufti).

• You must arrive at the examination venue at least 30 minutes before the examination starts.

• No candidate will be admitted after the examination has commenced.
