The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed N28.72 million in student loans to 522 students of Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, Jigawa State, under the Federal Government's Student Loan Programme.
Dean of Students Affairs and NELFUND Desk Officer at the University, Dr Abba Auwalu, disclosed this in an acknowledgement letter addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr.
According to the letter, the disbursement, which fully covers the statutory charges of all verified applicants from the institution, represents the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth, being the final, disbursements for the 2025/2026 academic session, paid in four separate tranches.
The letter, with reference number SLU/SAD/VC/001/VoL.III, showed that 195 students received N6.27 million in the sixth batch disbursed on March 9, 2026, while 129 students benefited from N3.84 million in the seventh batch released on March 23.
The eighth batch, disbursed on March 27, saw 19 students receive N637,000, while the largest tranche of N17.97 million was paid to 179 students in the ninth and final batch on April 27, 2026.
Dr Auwalu noted that the intervention enables affected students to continue their education uninterrupted and in line with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.
He commended NELFUND for the disbursement and appealed for continued support in the next academic session.
The disbursement to Sule Lamido University forms part of a wider rollout under the scheme, which has so far disbursed N161.97 billion to 864,798 students across 263 institutions nationwide since its launch. Applications for the current academic session opened in November 2025, with over 200 institutions submitting updated student data and about 280,000 applications received.
NELFUND was established under the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act to provide interest free education loans to eligible students in approved tertiary institutions, covering both institutional charges and upkeep support, as part of the Federal Government's continued expansion of access to higher education nationwide.
