Nigerian universities and research institutions can now access international scholarly resources and collaborate more effectively with global counterparts following the country's admission into eduGAIN, one of the world's largest academic authentication networks.

The Nigerian Research and Education Network secured membership after its Managing Director, Dr Joshua Atah, signed the membership declaration, marking a significant advancement for Nigeria's higher education sector in global digital identity infrastructure.

eduGAIN connects identity federations from over 100 countries and more than 10,000 identity and service providers, creating a trusted framework for authentication and access management. The platform simplifies secure access to digital content, research platforms, and collaborative services for universities and research institutions worldwide.

Nigerian institutions federated under NgREN can now participate fully in this global ecosystem, gaining seamless access to international research tools, repositories, and learning platforms that were previously difficult to reach.

The approval came after a thorough assessment and voting process by the eduGAIN Assembly, confirming the credibility and technical preparedness of Nigeria's national federation.

Dr Atah described the membership as transformative for Nigerian higher education, explaining that it would enhance collaboration opportunities for local institutions and strengthen trust frameworks for digital services.

According to him, the achievement firmly positions Nigeria's higher education system on the global stage, enabling institutions to seamlessly access a broad range of international research tools, repositories, and learning platforms.

eduGAIN operates under GÉANT, the pan European research and education networking organisation that interconnects identity federations worldwide, allowing secure and seamless cross border access to online research and education services.

Dr Atah thanked the eduGAIN Chair, Steering Committee, and Assembly members for their thorough review and approval of NgREN's application, reaffirming the network's dedication to expanding secure federated access across Nigeria's research and education landscape.

"As Nigeria's National Research and Education Network, NgREN remains committed to strengthening digital trust identity, enabling secure federated access, and supporting innovation across the higher education and research ecosystem," Dr Atah stated.

The membership opens new possibilities for Nigerian academics and researchers to engage with international peers, access cutting edge research materials, and participate in global scholarly projects without the authentication barriers that previously limited cross border academic collaboration.
