The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has appointed Professor Michael Takeet as the new Dean of its College of Veterinary Medicine, a development the Institution says reflects its focus on academic excellence and research leadership.

The appointment, approved by Vice Chancellor, Prof Babatunde Kehinde, followed a recommendation from the College Board of the College of Veterinary Medicine, according to a statement issued by the Ag Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, Mr Olasunkanmi Olajide.

The Appointment Letter, signed by the Registrar, Dr Titus Adeniyi, takes effect from 1 August 2026 for a three year tenure ending on 31 July 2029.

Takeet, a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology, was selected in recognition of his academic credentials and leadership experience. His research has centred on the diagnosis and molecular characterisation of parasites affecting cattle, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, and poultry, with particular focus on tropical and neglected parasitic protozoans such as Trypanosoma species, using DNA amplification and sequencing techniques. He has also studied the genetic basis of resistance to parasitic infection in goats and poultry, and teaches Veterinary Parasitology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Takeet is affiliated with several professional bodies, including the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, the American Society of Parasitologists, the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, and the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria.

The College he now leads took off in the 2001/2002 session with 30 students admitted into the 100 level of its six year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree programme, and today runs departments spanning Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, Medicine and Surgery, and Public Health. The College also operates a Veterinary Teaching Hospital that supports clinical training and provides diagnostic services to the surrounding community.

The University expressed confidence in Takeet's capacity to strengthen the College's teaching, research, and community engagement initiatives, stating that his appointment is expected to advance FUNAAB's broader mission of producing graduates and research capable of addressing challenges in animal health, food security, and public health.
