The governing council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Prof Peter Olamakinde Olapegba, a psychologist and current Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, as the institution's 14th vice chancellor following a competitive multi stage selection process involving eight candidates.

Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adebisi Akande, announced the appointment on Wednesday after the council unanimously approved the recommendation of the joint council senate selection board, describing the exercise as "thorough, transparent and highly competitive."

Akande disclosed that the process commenced in April 2026 when advertisements were published in three national newspapers, attracting six applications. A search team subsequently identified two additional qualified candidates, bringing the total to eight.

The council interacted with all eight candidates on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, with members independently assessing and scoring each candidate using approved guidelines. Five candidates advanced to the final stage on merit, where the joint council senate selection board conducted interviews before recommending Olapegba.

"It is, therefore, my pleasure to present to you the 14th Vice Chancellor of this great university, the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba. We wish him success in his tenure," Akande stated.

Olapegba will succeed the incumbent vice chancellor, whose tenure expires on 1 November 2026.

Born on 26 January 1970 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Olapegba attended Anglican Church Primary School, Ilutitun, Ondo State, and later obtained his Primary School Leaving Certificate from St Paul's African Primary School, Lanlate, in 1981. He completed his secondary education at Lanlate High School in 1986.

He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Ibadan in 1997, a master of Science in social and personality psychology in 1999, and a PhD in applied social psychology from the same institution in 2008.

Olapegba briefly served as a research officer at the National Examinations Council before joining the University of Ibadan as an assistant lecturer in June 2000, rising to the rank of professor in October 2014.
