The University of Jos has directed all staff, students, unions, and other users of its university halls to immediately suspend non academic activities within the facilities until further notice from management.

The directive was contained in an internal memorandum issued on 28th July 2026 by the Office of the Vice Chancellor through the Information, Publications, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, addressed to the entire university community.

The management did not state the reasons behind the suspension in the memo but indicated that the measure took immediate effect and would remain in force until a fresh notice was issued to announce the lifting of the restriction. Members of the university community were advised to await official communication before organising or participating in any non academic activities within the halls.

The directive covers all categories of hall users across the institution, meaning student unions, staff associations and external groups that routinely access university hall facilities for events, meetings or gatherings are equally bound by the suspension. No category of user was exempted from the directive.

The university acknowledged that the sudden suspension could disrupt planned activities and expressed regret for any inconvenience the decision might cause. Management appealed for the understanding and cooperation of all affected parties while the restriction remained in place, urging full compliance across the institution.

University halls in Nigerian tertiary institutions serve as venues for a wide range of activities beyond academics, including student union meetings, cultural events, religious gatherings, orientation programmes and external bookings. A blanket suspension of non academic use therefore carries significant implications for campus life and scheduled engagements within the institution.

The university has not indicated a timeline for the review or lifting of the suspension, leaving students, staff and other stakeholders reliant on subsequent official communication from management. Members of the university community have been urged to monitor official channels for updates.
