The University of Jos Alumni Association has called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the alleged mob killing of one of its graduates, Ibrahim Mbaya, and prosecute all persons found responsible.

The association issued the demand in a statement on Tuesday, describing the incident as "barbaric, unjustifiable and a gross violation of the right to life." It said Mbaya was allegedly beaten to death by a mob under circumstances that remain unclear.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged by the gruesome killing of our colleague and brother, Ibrahim Mbaya. No Nigerian deserves to die in such a manner, irrespective of any allegation against them," the statement read.

The association urged relevant authorities to expedite arrests and make the findings of their investigation public, insisting that due process, not mob action, must govern the resolution of the matter.

"We demand justice for Ibrahim Mbaya. The rule of law must prevail and not mob action," it stated.

In a separate statement published on its verified official social media platforms, the association condemned the killing as incompatible with the founding values of the institution.

"We condemn this senseless and reprehensible act in the strongest possible terms. Violence has no place within our university community and stands in direct contradiction to the values of excellence, character, mutual respect, and humanity upon which the University of Jos was founded," the association said.

It further called for a transparent and impartial investigation, stressing that no grievance could justify the taking of a human life.

"No grievance, disagreement, or circumstance can ever justify the taking of a human life. We call on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into this incident and ensure that everyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law," the statement added.

The police also weighed in, with a spokesperson warning that no individual holds legal authority to assault or kill a person based on suspicion alone. He urged members of the public to report criminal allegations to the police rather than resort to self help, noting that Nigeria's criminal justice system provided lawful procedures for investigating and prosecuting offences.

The association commiserated with the family of the deceased and pledged support in their pursuit of justice. Security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
