Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State, Prof Chris Ekong, has warned academic and non teaching staff against complacency in implementing his reform agenda, stressing that more changes are coming to reposition the institution as a centre for teaching, research, and manpower development.
Speaking through the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Prof Enobong Ikpeme, at a one day workshop for protocol staff themed "Excellence in Protocol Communication and Service Delivery: Supporting Visionary Leadership in the University of Uyo," the ninth substantive Vice Chancellor projected that changes in the institution would match the standard of Harvard University within three years.
He urged the workforce to show diligence in their duties, warning that although he smiles and speaks softly, he remains strict on discipline and would not hesitate to recommend the removal of any staff member found wanting.
Ekong noted that the appointment of two female Deputy Vice Chancellors reflected the changing culture of the Institution, insisting that old ways of doing things had passed and that staff attitude, dress code, and relationships with colleagues and outsiders must change accordingly.
He charged protocol staff with understanding their duties thoroughly and conducting personal research where necessary to excel in their assigned responsibilities.
Registrar of the University, Mrs Blossom Okorie, explained that the workshop was necessitated by negative public portrayals of the institution, noting that a single mistake by one staff member could embarrass the entire University.
She added that the responsibilities entrusted to protocol officers demand dedication, discretion, sound judgment, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
In his paper titled "Critical Issues in Protocol Management," lead Resource Person Dr Udeme Nana, a Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and former Director of Press Affairs to ex Governor Obong Victor Attah, urged protocol personnel to pay close attention to detail in their duties.
He listed the philosophies behind public affairs as giving honour to whom honour is due, organising people and structures, and ensuring procedural respect and accountability, adding that protocol management centres on norms that guide public engagement.
