The Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as University of Abuja, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, has announced new efforts to improve digital facilities and address the shortage of student accommodation.
He made this known at the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony held at the Main Campus Convocation Ground, yesterday, 12th February 2026.
Professor Fawehinmi said the institution is strengthening cooperation with agencies such as Galaxy Backbone to improve internet services for teaching, learning, and research.
According to him, the upgrade is part of the steps he has taken since assuming office to align the university with global academic standards and support students’ learning activities.
He explained that reliable digital systems are essential for modern education, innovation, and research development.
The Vice Chancellor, however, admitted that hostel accommodation remains a major concern due to increasing student enrolment. He revealed that more than 30,000 candidates applied for admission in the 2025/2026 academic session, but only about 8,000 were admitted because of limited space.
To reduce the housing gap, he said the institution is working with relevant agencies, including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), while also exploring public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives to build additional hostels.
He added that existing residential facilities are being maintained and that student safety and welfare remain key priorities of the university management.
