The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, has issued a 48 hour ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of what it described as a life threatening statement made by the Institution's Rector, warning that failure to comply would activate a 14 day strike notice.
In a statement signed by Tunde Ayedun on behalf of the union, ASUP alleged that the Rector remarked during two meetings held on April 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Union disclosed that the second meeting ended abruptly after the Rector reportedly told its chairman that "his life is tenured," a statement the union found threatening.
The Union further noted that an earlier request for an emergency meeting had been turned down because management was attending a function in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
ASUP stated that "the threat has not only sent jitters to the leadership of the chapter but has been perceived to equally require a legal and industrial perspective because matters that relate to life must not be handled with levity." The Union added that its 14 day strike notice "remains operational" regardless of any legal or industrial action that may follow.
The polytechnic management rejected the allegation outright. In a statement by its spokesman, Olayinka Iroye, management maintained that the Rector's full remark was "everything in life is tenured, including our careers and indeed our lives," describing it as a philosophical observation about the transient nature of human existence rather than a threat directed at any individual.
Management also alleged that the meeting was marked by "unguarded, rude utterances and verbal exchanges directed at the Rector by some members of the ASUP leadership," linked to earlier tensions over the institution's librarian.
The polytechnic reiterated its commitment to dialogue and appealed to ASUP to pursue an amicable resolution, with management stating it "remains open to further discussions aimed at sustaining a cordial and productive working relationship with all stakeholders."
