The Federal University of Technology Akure has secured full accreditation for its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery programme from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, with the Council approving an admission quota of 100 students following an inspection visit on April 22, 2026.

The accreditation visit was led by MDCN Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma, who expressed satisfaction with the University's preparedness and alignment with regulatory standards guiding medical education in Nigeria.

The delegation conducted a comprehensive inspection of facilities across the College of Health Sciences, covering Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. Departments assessed included Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Physiology, Community Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Microbial Pathology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The team also evaluated the Physiology Laboratory, Animal House, Histology and Histopathology Laboratories, the Medical Museum, and the Comprehensive Health Centre in Ijare. A visit to the FUTA Teaching Hospital was also conducted, where the delegation was received by Chief Medical Director, Professor Olusegun Ojo.

Ojo described the accreditation as a landmark achievement. "This is a monumental step forward. It gives our students the confidence and opportunity to progress in their training," he stated, adding that the approval clears the way for the university to proceed with its first professional medical examinations.

Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji expressed appreciation to the MDCN team and reaffirmed the university's commitment to implementing recommendations that would further strengthen the programme. She also acknowledged the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for mobilising community leaders to donate modern teaching laboratories and student accommodation in support of the programme.

College Provost, Professor Biodun Olagbuji, and Deputy Provost, Professor Victor Ukwenya, noted that the College was deliberately structured to meet MDCN standards and produce competent, industry ready medical professionals.

The MDCN approval follows full accreditation granted by the National Universities Commission after a resource verification exercise earlier in April 2026, making FUTA the holder of endorsements from both regulatory bodies for the programme.
