Twenty traders from Ikorodu completed a four week digital literacy programme at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology on Saturday, gaining practical skills in content creation, advertising, business promotion, and analytics designed to grow their enterprises online.
The maiden Digital Literacy for Ikorodu Trades training ran from Saturday, April 10, 2026, to May 2, 2026, with a closing ceremony that featured a best trainee competition won by Atobajaye Bolaji Taiwo in first place, William Abigail in second, and Oke Samson Olumide in third.
Vice Chancellor Professor Olumuyiwa Omotola Odusanya, speaking at the closing ceremony, described the initiative as a demonstration of the town and gown relationship under the Institution's IMPACT agenda, saying it reflected the direct benefits universities bring to their host communities.
He told participants they now faced a clear choice between continuing with manual promotion methods such as word of mouth, personal contact, and static billboards, or establishing a digital presence that would make their businesses visible globally.
"Our expectations are high. We expect you will be able to develop an effective social media strategy, high quality video content, compelling advertisements for your business, and make more money," Odusanya stated.
The Vice Chancellor charged participants to improve their email management, strengthen their graphics and branding skills, and remain excellence minded. He also urged them to invest in themselves, build strong networks, use data productively, and operate within the law, adding that the university would monitor their progress.
Dr Stephen Aderibigbe disclosed that winners of the best trainee competition were selected based on the quality of image and video produced, voice over delivery, and ability to use the provided tools, including artificial intelligence tools.
The Dean of the College of Engineering, Olawale Yakub Bankole, and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Abiodun Deloye were present at the ceremony.
