The National Open University of Nigeria has attributed its sweeping digital and research expansion to sustained funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, with the Institution's Vice Chancellor describing the agency as the backbone of tertiary education reform in Nigeria.

Professor Uduma Oji Uduma made the remarks during the University's 15th Convocation Ceremony, where he praised TETFund Executive Secretary, Arch. Sonny S. T. Echono, for his impact on the institution and the broader education landscape.

"Our profound appreciation goes to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, whose steadfast support has continued to strengthen the technological, research, and infrastructural foundations of this University and indeed the entire tertiary education landscape in Nigeria," Uduma stated.

He detailed how TETFund funding enabled the first phase of the university's Fibre Optics Infrastructure Project, connecting the headquarters and 23 study centres across Nigeria. A second phase is currently extending connectivity to 28 study centres across 16 state capitals and 12 additional communities nationwide.

A third phase, scheduled for 2026, is expected to deepen ICT integration and strengthen academic support units, including the Centre for Entrepreneurship and General Studies and the Career and Counselling Services Centre.

"The completion of the first phase of the Fibre Optics Infrastructure Project for Internet connectivity at the University Headquarters and in twenty three major study centres across state capitals has significantly enhanced access to online resources while improving staff productivity and institutional efficiency," he disclosed.

Uduma also highlighted TETFund's role in building research capacity, revealing that 71 researchers had directly benefited from Institutional Based Research and National Research Fund support mechanisms. He noted that the interventions had enabled NOUN to transition from knowledge dissemination to knowledge creation.

"Behind every upgraded laboratory, there is a silent TETFund commitment," he remarked, adding that no University grows beyond the reach of TETFund's strategic intervention.

He described the agency as a bridge between academic ambition and institutional reality, and credited it with advancing educational equity by supporting open and distance learning access for thousands of Nigerians.

"The transformation of the National Open University of Nigeria is not an abstract aspiration. It is a measurable, ongoing reality anchored on technology, research, and infrastructure," he concluded.
