Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has declared his ambition to place Lagos State University among the world's top 10 Universities after JAMB figures confirmed the Institution as Nigeria's most applied to University in the 2026 UTME cycle, drawing 84,426 applications ahead of all federal universities in the country.
Reacting to the figures, Sanwo Olu said the ranking was a direct outcome of deliberate government investment and institutional reform. "LASU's improved performance is a direct result of our deliberate focus on fostering an academic environment that leads to prosperity," he stated.
The governor credited the achievement to visionary leadership, dedicated faculty, and the implementation of the state government's THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly in the areas of funding and technological advancement. "This milestone further affirms LASU's growing reputation as a centre of academic innovation, discipline and global competitiveness," he said.
Sanwo Olu singled out Vice Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji Bello for special recognition, describing her tenure as transformative and crediting her with repositioning the University for both national and international recognition. "Her leadership has been a game changer in university administration. LASU's rise today is a reflection of strategic leadership and institutional commitment to excellence," he remarked.
The Governor assured that Lagos State would continue investing in the University and urged the entire Institution community to sustain the standards that produced the record figures. "I encourage the entire University community to continue the hard work and maintain LASU's position as the most sought after institution in Nigeria," he added.
LASU's 84,426 applications placed it ahead of the University of Lagos, which recorded 78,240, Obafemi Awolowo University with 60,370, the University of Ibadan with 58,895, and the University of Benin with 55,425.
