A 200 level Biology Education student of Sa'adu Zungur University (SAZU), Maryam Yakeem, is receiving hospital treatment after suspected phone snatchers attacked and inflicted multiple injuries on her near the university's main campus in the Itas/Gadau local government area of Bauchi State.
According to eyewitness accounts, four suspects approached the student and demanded her mobile phone. When she resisted, one of the attackers used a sharp object to inflict cuts on her face and other parts of her body before forcefully taking the device and fleeing the scene. She was subsequently rushed to a medical facility in the area, where sources confirmed she is in a stable condition, with a possible referral to another hospital depending on her progress.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the University's Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, stated that the attack occurred outside the university premises, describing reports suggesting otherwise as misleading and inaccurate.
The University management also expressed concern over the spread of unverified information by online platforms, warning that such reports could create unnecessary panic and erode public trust in the institution.
Vice Chancellor Professor Fatimah Tahir reaffirmed the Institution's commitment to the safety of students and staff, noting that no cases of insecurity have been recorded within SAZU's campuses due to sustained collaboration with security agencies.
Following the incident, the Chief Security Officer and the Dean of Students' Affairs visited Yakeem at the hospital to ensure she received proper medical attention.
Professor Tahir extended sympathy to the student and urged calm among students, staff, and the general public, assuring that measures were being strengthened to guarantee the safety of the university community both on and off campus.
