The University of Lagos has unveiled a Geosciences Centre of Excellence funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board, closing out a project that spanned four vice chancellors and 15 years since its inception in 2010.
Vice Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, who presided over the unveiling, described the centre as a key driver of industry collaboration and a direct response to the longstanding disconnect between classroom learning and practical application in Nigerian universities.
"At UNILAG, we don't give up or abandon legacies. We build on the works of previous managements. Each Vice Chancellor since the 10th has carried the vision forward, so you can rest assured that your investment is safe with us," she stated.
The centre comprises three suspended floors housing a reception, workshops, laboratories, a lecture theatre, museum, simulation laboratory, library, offices, sit out, and convenience facilities. It is designed to support interdisciplinary research across geosciences, engineering, computer science, physics, and environmental sciences, while preparing students for careers in reservoir modelling, seismic interpretation, and core analysis.
Ogunsola traced the project's history through successive administrations, noting it began under Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe, was repositioned as an industry University linkage centre under Professor Rahaman Bello, and had its design optimised under Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe before reaching completion under her tenure.
Managing Director of SNEPCo, Ronald Adams, described the centre as a national hub for geoscience learning, research, and industry engagement, reaffirming the company's commitment to investing in Nigerian talent.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board, Felix Ogbe, represented by Abayomi Bamidele, called for the facility to be fully utilised and maintained to global standards, with measurable outcomes in training, research, and industry support.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC Limited, Bayo Ojulari, represented by Olanrewaju Igandan, urged students to maximise the opportunities provided by the facility for academic and professional growth.
