The University of Lagos has announced the commissioning of the Geosciences Centre of Excellence, situated at its Science Complex, formerly known as the Faculty of Science. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 17, 2026. This Centre represents a significant step forward in the University's commitment to strengthening teaching, research, and real world impact in the geosciences sector.
The project is the result of a formidable collaboration funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). These partners have contributed to a legacy that will support today’s students and researchers, as well as future generations.
Designed as a modern three suspended floor facility, the Centre brings together spaces tailored for learning and discovery. It includes laboratories, workshops, lecture theatres, a museum, a simulation laboratory, and a library. Offices, sit out areas, and other support facilities complete a space that is functional and forward looking. Every part of the building was created to encourage curiosity, collaboration, and hands on experience.
The Geosciences Centre of Excellence reflects the powerful idea that learning should not stop at theory. By strengthening the connection between the classroom and industry, the Centre creates opportunities for students and researchers to engage with real challenges. As the University unveils this facility, it marks another moment in UNILAG's continuing journey to evolve and contribute meaningfully to national and global development through knowledge and innovation.
