The University of Ilorin has announced plans to erect a monument on its campus in honour of its late former Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, who died on June 6, 2026, as tributes from academic leaders, alumni and community groups continued to pour in at a Special Senate Session held in his memory.

Current vice chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole disclosed the decision at the session, describing Ambali's tenure between 2012 and 2017 as one that left lasting footprints across all aspects of institutional development. "As a University, we are sad, but we are celebrating a life of fulfilment and achievements. What we see is his courage, candour and record of service," Egbewole stated.

He credited Ambali's administration with maintaining uninterrupted academic calendars, expanding programmes, strengthening staff welfare, upgrading digital library systems, improving power and water supply, expanding health services and deepening international partnerships. Egbewole described the late scholar as "an introverted dynamo" who was "accommodating, calm, and deeply resourceful in leadership."

Outgoing JAMB Registrar Emeritus Professor Ishaq Oloyede, joining the session via Zoom, described Ambali as "a respected scholar and humane administrator whose legacy continues to shape the institution," adding that his life was devoted to service and the upliftment of others regardless of background.

Former Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Nike Yetunde Ijaiya recalled that Ambali never rushed decisions. "He respected opinions from staff and students. He never stampeded decisions. Working with him made one feel comfortable taking responsibility," she noted, adding that his tenure saw the introduction of programmes including Cyber Security and Optometry alongside stronger NUC accreditations.

Another former Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Raheem Adebayo Lawal, described Ambali as firm yet compassionate. "He was humble in life and gentle in death," Lawal said, recalling that Ambali spent his final day in worship, family visits and acts of charity.

Former Vice Chancellor Professor Suleiman Age Abdulkareem said Ambali's tenure consolidated UNILORIN's standing as one of Nigeria's foremost Universities. Leaders of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union also called on the University to name a structure after him and provide support for his family.
