Students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, took to the streets on Wednesday afternoon after their Students' Union Government President was allegedly assaulted by members of a local vigilante group, with a video of the incident circulating widely on social media.

Comrade Ochuba Chukwusom Samuel, the UNIZIK SUG President, was allegedly attacked by operatives of the Udogachi Vigilante Group shortly after 2 p.m. within the University community. Footage circulating online showed the student leader on the ground while men believed to be members of the group assaulted him. An emergency message shared among students alleged the attack was carried out in retaliation for his advocacy on student welfare issues, and that there was also an attempt to shoot him.

"The worst has happened. Our SUG President has been brutally beaten by the Udogachi Vigilante Group while standing and fighting for the rights of UNIZIK students," the message read.

Students responded swiftly, mobilising to Aroma Junction where they staged a protest that temporarily blocked traffic and disrupted movement in the area. Demonstrators demanded accountability and protection for their elected representatives.

The incident raises serious concerns about the safety of student union leaders in Nigerian Universities, particularly those who publicly challenge conditions affecting their peers.
